Spandex, also referred as Lycra, is a fabric made by reacting polyester with diisocyanate to form polyester-polyurethane copolymer. The polymer is converted into fibre through the dry-spinning technique.
Spandex synthetic fibre is known for its exceptional elasticity. The fabric can stretch up to 5 times its original length when exposed to tension. However, when it is released from tension, it returns to nearly its original size.
Characteristics of Spandex
There are some properties that spandex fabric is suitable for making the cloth like:
- It is highly elastic
- It is lightweight, soft and smooth
- It is more durable, supple and has higher retractive ability compared to rubber
- It fibres can be easily dyed
- It’s resistant to abrasion and damage caused by oils, lotions and perspiration
Types of Shirts Suitable For Using Spandex Fabric
Spandex’s elasticity and strength makes it’s a perfect fabric for making sports clothing, especially skin-tight garments. It is mainly used in manufacturing swimsuits, hosiery ski pants, cycling jerseys, golf jackets, exercise wear, waist bands and bra straps.
Spandex is also used in making wetsuits, rowing unisuits, superhero outfits, wrestling singlet, underwear among other outfits.
Types of Spandex
There are two main spandex types in the market: two-way spandex and four-way spandex. Two-way spandex only allow stretching one way i.e. length or width. On the other hand, the four-way spandex material can be stretched both ways-length and width-wise
