Linen Fabric

Linen fabric is a material woven from the fibres of stems of flax plant. Though the fibres are very strong, they require specialist techniques when collecting to avoid damage. Upon harvesting, the stems are stripped down into essential fibres. After all the exterior parts of the stalks have been removed, the soft fibres are gathered and spun into long threads, which can be used to weave the fabric.

Characteristics of Linen

Linen fabric is smooth and soft due to its lint-free finish. It’s also highly breathable, a characteristic that makes it perfect for summer clothing. While the linen’s material is off-white colour, its fibres can be easily dyed with a range of colours. Linen is also very strong, lightweight and durable. It doesn’t usually stretch over time but gets softer with every wash.

Generally, linen can be machine-washed at about 40 Degrees Celsius on linen wash setting or gentle cycle. In order to achieve the best wash results, it can be important to refer to instructions written on the linen garment.

Types of Shirts Suitable For Using Linen

Linen can be used alone or with other fabrics to make shirts, dresses, bed linens, tablecloths, chair covers and more. Shirts (either formal or casual) made from linen are usually great for summer as they tend to be cool and absorbent. Linen is also popular in making dress shirts, dinner shirts, poet shirts and camp shirts.

Types of Linen

Damask Linen Fabric

This type of fabric is woven using a mix of plain and satin weaves on a jacquard loom. The flat and reversible fibres ensure the end material has a smooth texture. Damask linen mostly comes in one colour and is used to make table cloths, napkins, table runners among other textile pieces.

Plain-Woven Linen Fabric

Plain-woven linen, commonly known as glass towelling linen, is a fabric that’s used to wipe glassware. The fabric features stripped or checkered pattern and is used to make cleaning clothes and tea towels. While plain-woven linen is more absorbent, the downside is that it’s less durable.

Loosely Woven Linen Fabric

This type of linen is made of loosely woven fabric, which makes it highly absorbent. The fabric is mostly used in making sanitary towels and diapers. Some linen fabrics under this category are characterized by small geometric patterns while others are produced from pure linen or blended with cotton.

Sheeting Linen

Sheeting linen is a heavy, sturdy material that’s used in the manufacture of sheets. The fabric is also used in making suits, dresses among other linen clothing.
